More than 20 years ago, Basel-based photographer Peter Schulthess discovered the world behind bars, a world with its own special architecture and peculiarities. This soon developed into a dynamic of its own, followed by specialised books, illustrated books and exhibitions - including in Portugal.
This led to the creation of "the portuguese prison photo project" in 2016, for which he and a Portuguese photographer repeatedly captured the everyday and special aspects of prisons in Portugal, each with their own technique and perspective.
A first series of the pictures was shown at the Centro Português de Fotografia in Porto. After two further exhibitions in Lisbon, the Museo do Portimão in the Algarve will now host the most extensive exhibition: to mark the 50th anniversary of the revolution in April 2024, the special exhibition will also show a section with historical images of the political prisons of the fascist regime that was overthrown at the time.
