AI regulation – Council of States sends important signal for intellectual property

The AI Alliance Creative Industries (KIK) welcomes the unanimous approval by the Council of States of the Gössi motion ‘Better protection of intellectual property against AI misuse’. The Council of States is thus sending an important signal for the protection of intellectual property, including in the context of artificial intelligence (AI). The KIK calls on the National Council and subsequently the Federal Council to press ahead with the implementation of these protective measures as a matter of the highest priority, as delays could cause irreparable damage. SIYU is a member of the KIK and supports the motion.

As a reminder, the use of copyright-protected works by developers and users of generative AI models to train their algorithms and generate synthetic content significantly threatens the financial basis of the work of creative professionals, producers and media companies. This often happens without appropriate licensing or the knowledge of the rights holders, which can also lead to insufficient recognition (lack of source references) and damage to the reputation of the authors.
