SIYU - professionelle fotografie schweiz nau.ch recently answered questions about the current Mango campaign with AI-generated images and models.
Three key questions were addressed:
1. will photographers lose jobs in the future due to such AI developments? 2. what effects can be expected for the photography industry? 3. what advantages do real photographs have over AI-generated images?
Unfortunately, there wasn't enough space in the article for our detailed answers. So here are our detailed answers to these important questions.
1. do you think that photographers will lose jobs in the future due to such AI developments?
We have recognised that AI developments will lead to a loss of orders in the future, especially in the field of advertising photography. However, we believe that AI-generated images convey a certain stylistic impression. We are convinced that images benefit from interpersonal interaction and the atmosphere on set. The interaction between photographer and subject leads to unique and unpredictable results. We will be watching to see if the trend of AI-generated advertising campaigns becomes common practice or if the trend reverses and consumers demand more authenticity again.
In other areas of photography, such as press or documentary photography, we do not see any risk of a loss of orders due to the development of AI.
When working with AI-generated models, it must also be ensured that violations of personal rights by people who happen to look similar do not become an unresolved issue.
2. What are the expected effects of such AI developments for the photography industry?
Of course, AI development also harbours opportunities, particularly in the workflow and in post-production. AI can make the photographer's workflow considerably more efficient. With AI-supported tools, photographers can not only work creatively, but also expand their field of work.
However, there is a risk that the quality and authenticity of photographs will be diluted by the use of AI. This is why we, together with other organisations in the creative industry, are calling for mandatory labelling of AI-generated content.
3. what do you see as the advantages of real photographs over AI-generated images?
We firmly believe that images benefit from human interaction and the atmosphere on set. Photographs capture authentic moments and emotions that are often difficult to recreate artificially. Furthermore, photographs have a documentary value and can depict important cultural and historical moments that cannot be replaced by AI generation. At a time when deepfakes and manipulated images are becoming increasingly common, we rely on real photographs because they create trust and credibility.
