After four exhibitions in Portugal (2017- 2024), a three-volume publication on ‘the portuguese prison photo project’ was finally published with over 300 photographs on 324 pages.
One volume with black and white images was taken by Luis Barbosa, Portugal, and a second volume with colour photographs by Basel photographer Peter Schulthess. He has visited the country repeatedly over the years and was able to photograph more prisons there.
Both have photographed 7 ‘Estabelecimentos Prisional’ each and, with their different interpretations, show two completely different perspectives. The harsh black and white contrasts here, the documentary, detailed views there. The third volume describes, in Portuguese and English, the project, the exhibitions, the prison system in Portugal and the 14 prisons and contains the captions.
