Philipp Funke - Photo book ‘A Dictator's Home’. The villa of Albanian dictator Enver Hoxha was closed to the public - both during and after his four-decade rule (1945 to 1985). In impressive photographs (taken in 2019), SIYU photographer Philipp Funke shows the almost unchanged private rooms of Hoxha and his family and gives an insight into the character of a cruel rule with his photo book ‘A Dictator's Home’. With his restrained yet powerful portrayal, Funke artistically documents a part of a bygone era.
In 2023, the villa was handed over to a French foundation, which had the building remodelled. The foundation and architects commissioned Funke to document the new villa as well. Since then, as the photographer was recently able to see for himself, a lot has changed. This makes his book all the more important. With texts by historian Christiane Jaenicke, he records a piece of Albanian history. The project was supported by the Foundation and ALPA. The pictures for the book will also be shown at EMOP Berlin - European Month of Photography 2025. /mj
